WHEELS TO WORK

Wheels to Work (WTW) was founded as a 501(c)3 in 2021, with a simple mission: transfer used cars directly from donors to people who need them.

Having access to reliable transportation in the form of a personal vehicle is a crucial part of success for many adults and families in Cleveland. Driving to work, school, family and community obligations, shopping and more allows newcomer families to become fully a part of our city, moving up the socioeconomic ladder and creating stability for generations to come. In short, owning a car is life changing.

From the start, WTW partnered with Re:Source Cleveland to identify clients in need, ensure they had the necessary drivers' license and car insurance, and assist with registration of transferred vehicles. In 2025, WTW officially became part of the Re:Source organization and to date we have completed over 30 vehicle transfers.

VEHICLE DONATION

At the center of the Wheels to Work program is vehicle donation. We accept donated vehicles in good used condition, verifying their road worthiness, and match them with previously-vetted individuals and families in need.

Interested in donating your car?

Step 1: Complete the inquiry form below and we will be in touch.

Step 2: If vehicle is in acceptable condition, it will be matched with a recipient on our list. Re:Source coordinates all of the details to directly transfer each vehicle to the recipient. After transfer (usually within two weeks) we will follow up with photos and information about the recipient of your vehicle!

If you have questions or would like to speak with someone on our team before submitting the donation form, please email info@resourcecleveland.org.

DRIVERS' EDUCATION

Behind the Wheel

We have long been aware that there is a significant need for increased access to affordable drivers' education.

Since 2023, we have been able to provide a limited number of scholarships to teens and young adults to go through their drivers' education courses, removing a significant cost barrier and paving the way for 25 students and counting to complete this coursework at certified driving schools.

Late last year, we began offering in-car practice sessions at our office to drivers 18 and older who have already secured their temporary permit. Thanks to a generous donation from the Toumert family of a used Honda CR-V, and the installation of a passenger side safety brake, we now have our very own driver's ed car for this purpose! Since 2024 we have trained 14 drivers behind the wheel, 12 of whom have since secured their licenses.

Clinton arrived in the US in 2024. He works to support his mother and younger siblings and had been commuting by bus over 4 hours per day. His job was put in jeopardy when the buses were delayed and he was given a warning at his place of employment. Clinton not only received a car from Re:Source's Wheels to Work program but was able to secure his driver's license after completing 10 hours of in-car practice with Re:Source staff.

Recent change in Ohio law now requires anyone under the age of 21 to complete drivers' education courses, and anyone who has not yet secured citizenship or a green card (of which there are many hundreds waiting in the green card processing queue) are required to complete the full 32 hour course. Our eventual goal is to create an ongoing scholarship fund to assist in offsetting the costs of this course, which averages $550, for those who are over the age of 18 and have already secured their temporary driving permit.

Support our efforts by making a donation on our GIVE page.
